As I type, the junior Mendozas are celebrating World Book Day at school, dressed as their favourite literary characters (James Bond and Spiderman respectively). To me, the main World Book Day site is a bit of a wasted opportunity, as it’s a rather dry information site that does little to communicate the joy and excitement of a really good read. Fingers crossed they come up with something more engaging and interactive for their online offering next year.
In the meantime Quick Reads is an imitative which aims to help get reluctant readers hooked on books. Twelve top writers (including Ruth Rendell, Richard Branson and Joanna Trollope) have contributed new short books to the scheme; Each book is priced at £2.99 and has been written to be especially accessible to reluctant readers – But you can download a special voucher from the site, which will give you a £1 discount on any of the twelve titles.
Enthusiastic readers can find suggestions of books they may enjoy at What Should I Read Next You simply type in the name of a book you like and the site analyses their database of over 20,000 books to suggest another title you’re likely to enjoy. Recommendations are based on collective taste, as determined by which titles have appeared on other people’s favourites list. As the site becomes more popular its recommendations will also become more accurate, so you can improve the site’s service by registering and adding a list of your own favourite books.
STOP PRESS: You can download the first chapter of all the books featured in the Quick Reads initiative free-of-charge at Love Reading
