Website of the Day: Tuesday May 4th
This latest virus threat first emerged on Saturday May 1st and can infect computers running recent versions of Windows XP and Windows 2000. Unlike other worms which are spread by e-mail, Sasser can travel around the internet unaided. The worm causes some computers to continually crash and reboot, but it does not appear to cause any permanent damage to files or machines.
Microsoft has published a guide to protect against and remove the worm. The key points are to
1) install a firewall,
2) download and install a specific security update
and
3) run an online virus scanner and removal tool.
We recommend that all Windows users follow the above steps, in order to minimise your own risk of infection, and to stop the worm spreading to other unprotected machines.
